Why Do We Make Podcasts About Palestine Demos?

Why Do We Make a Podcast About Palestine Demos? Here’s our answer.

A couple of days ago, we were over in Edinburgh at the “Yes It’s a Genocide” March and Rally. It was one of dozens of rallies over UK. We filmed the gathering in front of St Giles, and we recorded the speeches in front of the UKGovernment Hub.

Rally for Palestine. Edinburgh. Genocide.

We added that material to our social media channels:

  • Our TikTok: two posts which have had 1850 views so far
  • Our YouTube Channel: a 5 min clip of the march setting off from St Giles has had 4,800 views. Then we posted a 40minute podcast “Palestine – Yes It Is a Genocide” with more footage of the demonstration and three speeches from the UKGovHub Plaza. It has had 1,000 views so far.
  • Our BlueSky: several posts giving the links to these recordings.
  • Our Ko-Fi page: link to the speeches
  • Facebook: today we’ll begin sharing the link to the podcast around Scottish Independence supporting groups on Facebook.

What Do Our Social Media Followers Think About These Podcasts?

We’ll let these public comments from the podcast speak for themselves:

Not Everyone Agrees Though

We don’t mind critical comments on our social media. We try to respond to them. Unless they use offensive language. We just delete those. But a question asked in good faith deserves an answer.

Yes It’s a Genocide. Political Action. Scottish Independence.

Here’s our answer

  • this affects Scots with family in Gaza. And it affects Scots who have worked in Gaza, see for example our podcast with Philippa Whitford “Will Gaza Rise from the Ashes?
  • Scotland is not immune to world events. Israel is breaking international law. UN has said that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide.
  • UK media has leant towards supporting UKGov views on the Israeli actions in Gaza. That was why we filmed the Glasgow Rally outside BBC Scotland HQ last year.
  • and, last but not least, we are part of a Union that is supporting genocide, arms production and nuclear weapons. The fact that we have no power over those UKGov policies is part of our argument for independence. It’s a boost to Scotland’s international profile when we make that clear. See the comment above from Paris!

What Kind of Independent Scotland Will We Build?

We want Scotland to be governed with compassion, fairness and justice. We’re campaigning for independence so we can live in a country that upholds international law. That doesn’t maintain a stock nuclear arms.

When kids’ sandals litter the killing fields of Gaza – and elsewhere – we want Scotland to be there on Gaza’s side. And Ukraine’s side. We want Scotland’s voice heard over there in the UN General Assembly. We want to be arguing for the European Convention of Human Rights.

And yes, that is for the future. In the meantime we’ll go to rallies and podcast them.

  • Thank you for reminding all of those dissenting or confused that we are all humans living together on this planet. The rules we are supposed to live by are the UN legal system. If one country flaunts these, breaks them and denigrated those trying to uphold them international chaos and anarchy follow. We are all Palestinians. We are all responsible fo upholding the law, we in the west have for too long ignored what Israel, UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia and NZ have been doing under all our noses. It is high time we were brought back to heel to follow the rules. The justice in the world needs to be fairly metered out to all. The UN system needs reform to ensure this happens effectively and we all need to uphold it.

  • You are the “editors” , it is good that you justify what you cover, but frankly if folks think you should not be covering the genocide then they dont have to view that podcast. There is a further reason why you should continue to cover the events in Gaza and that is that our elected government is complicit in the genocide in these ways. Firstly Scottish Enterprise provides funding to arms companies and that is within Scot Gov’s power to stop. Secondly, policing is devolved and Scot Gov could instruct Police Scotland not to pursue non violent direct action as terrorism – yes it would bring them into conflict with westminster but that needs to happen more anyway.
