A Peace Garden in Glasgow Botanic Gardens
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima bomb it is more vital than ever that people are educated about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons.

In Geneva 1985 former US President Reagan and Soviet leader Gorbachev stated that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought”. That statement was later reaffirmed by other leaders including those of China, the UK and France. Shamefully today’s Westminster politicians speak glibly about being “battle ready” and crow about the £ billions they intend to pour into the nuclear arsenal a stones from from Scotland’s biggest city.

It is against this backdrop that Glasgow’s Lord Provost welcomed local school children to take part in the planting of a Peace Garden in Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens which will create a place for reflection and education of the vital importance of peace not war, bairns not bombs.
Last summer we shared the story of the gingko tree which miraculously survived the Hiroshima bomb and the saplings that have grown from the seeds of that tree. That was the inspiration for the creation of the peace garden.
The Peace Garden will be formally opened at 11am on 6th August 2025. All are welcome to attend.
