Income Inequality and How It Shapes Society

We have a return appearance of Stuart Donald on the podcast this month. This time we’re talking to him about the hidden costs to society of income inequality.
The podcast was prompted by Fiona coming across the social media accounts and website of the Equality Trust – Dismantling Inequalites of Wealth and Power. It’s an organisation which emerged from the collaboration of Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson about the effects and costs of inequality on society. They summarised their findings in the book The Spirit Level – Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better.
Inequality certainly comes at a cost to our society. Or to put it another way , because our richest citizens take their money out of our economy and hoard it in offshore accounts or in property portfolios, the rest of us are on the receiving end of the social consequences of that. We think the range of those consequences will surprise you. Possibly sicken you.
Stuart is one of our go-to people to talk about data analysis and graphs! We focussed on four of the graphs. You’ll find those four first in the following slide show, followed by the others that we didn’t have time to include.
