Private Wealth, Social Inequality, Land Reform were the topics in an impressive talk by Laurie MacFarlane at a recent conference organised the Independence Forum Scotland.
What we most appreciate about Laurie’s thinking is the way he weaves together topics that often are dealt with separately. And in weaving them together he makes clear the sheer necessity of solving the smaller problems that have emerged from them, all underpinned by the land ownership pattern we have in Scotland. A pattern that is ancient but is still being replicated now – lots of land, few owners. And now with new ways of extracting value from land – using it to claim carbon offsetting for business.
The venue was Greyfriars Charteris Centre in Edinburgh. A lovely building. But the sound quality was challenging and neither we nor the other podcasters at the event got much in way of usable recordings. But this is OK. Stick your head phones on and try it. We guarantee it’s worth a little bit of effort on your part. And you can turn on YouTube transcript and use that too.
- Laurie is Co-Director at Future Economy Scotland. He’s a young man with a very impressive CV and an equally impressive ability to communicate his ideas for the future.
- The IFS conference was excellent and you can find out more about it here.
- We have added this to our National Conversation for Scotland playlist.
- Land reform is a subject we report on regularly. You can find some of those podcasts in our Food, Farming & Land Reform playlist.
