The Battle of Falkirk took place on 22nd July 1298. It was a tragic loss for the Scots under William Wallace.

Battle of Falkirk. William Wallace. John de Graeme

His comrade Sir John de Graeme, or Graham, died in the battle and is buried at Trinity Church in Falkirk. The De Graeme Society organise an annual commemoration of the battle and the brave men who gave their lives defending Scotland’s freedom.

This year’s event, whilst a moving occasion, was also a family friendly day out with medieval market, battle re-enactments, performers, a Town Crier and all sorts of other activities to engage, entertain and educate Scots in our own history.

Indypodcasters Fiona and Marlene went along to Falkirk and this is their souvenir of the day. If you enjoy this podcast, have look at our Scottish History podcast playlist.

There are several sites in and around Falkirk associated with De Graeme and the Battle. One of them is this mural by Chris Rutterford which is installed at the memorial fountain in Victoria Park, Falkirk. It depicts the moments before battle and features the faces of over 100 people from around Scotland who helped crowdfund the project in return for appearing in the battle scene. I can see Jeor Mormont from Game of Thrones. He would have been a handy commander to have had in 1298.
